Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disease characterised by reduced bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, resulting in increased bone fragility and a greater risk of fractures. Although bone loss can occur gradually and without noticeable symptoms, osteoporosis can significantly affect mobility, independence and quality of life as the condition progresses. It is particularly common with increasing age, but can also be associated with hormonal changes, certain medications, nutritional deficiencies and other underlying medical conditions. As the disease often develops silently, many people remain unaware that their bones have become weaker until a fracture occurs.
The consequences of osteoporosis can be serious, particularly when fractures occur in the hip, spine or wrist. Vertebral fractures may cause persistent back pain, loss of height and changes in posture, while hip fractures can result in prolonged immobility, loss of independence and increased risk of further health complications. Despite the availability of treatments designed to slow bone loss and reduce fracture risk, osteoporosis remains an important global health challenge, highlighting the need for earlier detection, prevention and effective long-term management. Repeated fractures can further reduce physical function and quality of life, creating a cycle of increasing frailty and disability.
